Your Health and You: Part 13 – Lung Cancer Screening

One of the most common causes of death in human existence is the disease called cancer. Cancer is the uncontrollable division of abnormal cells in the body. This disease can affect parts of the body such as the breast, lung, bladder, kidney, prostate, etc. When cancer affects the lung, it is known as lung cancer; when it affects the breast it is known as breast cancer and so on.

In this series, our focus will be on lung cancer and how it can be detected and treated. Please watch the SAWBO animated video on lung cancer screening below for a better understanding.

A Little About Lung Cancer

As stated earlier, lung cancer is the type of cancer that affects the lung and it is the leading cause of cancer deaths.

Types of Lung Cancer

Basically, there are two types of lung cancer, namely:

  • Small cell lung cancer: This is the most common type of lung cancer and it occurs almost exclusively in heavy smokers; and
  • Non-small cell lung cancer: This is a name given to other types of lung cancer such as squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma and large cell carcinoma.

Causes of Lung Cancer

Several factors may be responsible for lung cancer, especially “smoking.” I am sure you have seen the emphasis on smoking. This is because smoking is the major cause of lung cancer. Other factors according to Mayo Clinic include:

  • Prolonged exposure to secondhand smoke
  • Previous radiation therapy to the chest
  • Exposure to radon gas
  • Exposure to asbestos and other carcinogens such as arsenic, chromium and nickel
  • Family history of lung cancer

Symptoms of Lung Cancer

Lung cancer may not show any signs and symptoms at the early stage until it gets to an advanced stage. Advanced stage symptoms include:

  • Headache
  • Excessive weight loss
  • Bone pain
  • Difficult breathing
  • Droplets of blood when coughing
  • Prolonged cough
  • Chest pain
  • Hoarseness

Dangers of Lung Cancer

  • Difficult breathing
  • Coughing up blood
  • Severe chest and joint pain when coughing
  • Pleural effusion (Fluid in the chest)
  • Metastases (cancer spreading to other parts of the body)
  • Possible death

Is Lung Cancer Curable?

As the saying goes “prevention is better than cure.” It is better to prevent lung cancer in every possible way, but, the cure rate can be as high as 80 – 90%; this is why you should watch the video below.
