Simple Drip Irrigation Technique

Drip Tank

As we approach the dry season, some farmers will probably be worried about their crops due to increased sunny conditions associated with the season. The dry season brings the possibility that there will be little or no rainfall and this will not be too good for their plants, especially in regions like the northern parts of Nigeria.

Lack of water can affect plant growth, leaf color, root and shoot. It can also result in yield decrease or loss. Some farmers may even want to consider not taking the risk in order to avoid yield loss, but there is hope my friend.

The good news is that you can still have great crops and enjoy bountiful harvests in dry season.

This is why our focus today will be on drip irrigation. If you are a farmer and you are worried about the season or you have decided not to farm this season, this article is for you. Just read on:

I will be sharing an animation video from the SAWBO team on how you can build a drip irrigation system to water your plants without stress.

Crops with Drip Irrigation Technique

Drip Irrigation

Drip irrigation is a very efficient technique that allows a consistent and direct supply of water to crops through a network of plastic pipes/dripper-lines, valves, hoses, tubing or emitters that are channeled from the water source. It is also known as trickle irrigation, and it is especially helpful during a drought or dry season. This technique supplies water directly to the root zone of plants.

With drip irrigation, every drop of water is beneficial to plants, and by not wasting water, yields can be increased and crop production more efficient.

Why should I use Drip Irrigation?

Did I just hear you ask why you should use this technique? Well, there are a lot of benefits, but here are few of them:

  1. It is cost effective, so you do not have to spend too much on labour
  2. It is the most efficient technique to use in drought or dry season
  3. It is quite easy to build
  4. Water is trickled slowly, so you do not have to worry about waste
  5. It distributes the required amount of water to plants if properly managed, so you do not have to worry about too much or or too little water supply to plants
  6. It minimizes fertilizer/nutrient loss
  7. It reduces topsoil erosion
  8. You still enjoy great harvest
  9. It keeps foliage dry to reduce the risk of disease and pest infestation
  10. Reduced weed growth
  11. You can make it a source of income

Note: This technique must be combined with Raised Planting Beds. You can learn more about raised planting beds here.

Importance of this video

One of the significant things about the SAWBO videos is that their illustrations are clear and easy to understand. This video clearly illustrates:

  1. How to build a drip irrigation system
  2. The measurements required
  3. The materials required in building a drip irrigation system
  4. You can use the knowledge acquired from this video to generate extra income.

Note: Someone might be in serious need of this information so do not keep it to yourself.
