I used to always surf the internet for useful information about different topics such as: how to maintain good personal hygiene, the importance of water to crops, different pests and diseases of crops, peace and conflict resolution e.t.c until I stumbled across this very interesting research animation site: https://sawbo-animations.org/home. I was impressed with their work and I haven’t stopped getting useful educational information from them for free.
WHAT!!! Did I just say free? YEAH! For free.

Permit me to introduce to you the “SCIENTIFIC ANIMATIONS WITHOUT BORDERS” (SAWBO) team.
Hhmmm! I know what you are thinking right now. The name doesn’t sound like a research platform right? Don’t worry, just let me tell you a little more about them.
What is SAWBO?
SAWBO is the acronym for the words “Scientific Animations Without Borders” and it’s a Michigan State university based program. SAWBO transforms extension information on relevant topics such as agriculture, disease and women’s empowerment, into 2D, 2.5D and 3D animations, which are then voice overlaid into a diversity of languages from around the world for better understanding, creating over 70 different educational animations in over 100 languages.
All SAWBO animations are made freely available to anyone wishing to use them for educational purposes. Animations can be downloaded from a diversity of SAWBO channels and used on computers, tablets, cell phones, TVs, and overhead projection systems. So you see? Even teaching just got easier. SAWBO is a one-step educational system: from global experts to end user.
The SAWBO team is made of Professional researchers and great travelers like Dr. Barry Pittendrigh, Dr. Julia Bello-Bravo, Dr. Weilin Sun, Madam Severina Adames and many others, who do not give information based on what they have read on papers but what they have witnessed. They believe that accurate information is the bedrock of great knowledge.
SAWBO has also received many awards and recognitions as a result of their commitment to professionalism in delivering accurate and well-organised educative information through animations.
The awards include: Campus Award for Excellence in Public Engagement, Champaign-Urbana International Humanitarian Award (CUIHA), Sheth Distinguished Faculty Award for International Achievement, State of Illinois Senate Recognition e.t.c.

Why SAWBO is relevant to everyone
The following reasons and more account for why SAWBO is relevant to everyone (i.e, young and old)
- Commitment:
A program of this magnitude cannot go far without the commitment of team members. That is to say, for SAWBO to have come this far in reaching out to everyone who can access the internet, it means that every single team member is committed to his responsibility. This is a great lesson; don’t you think?
2. Professionalism:
Topics are professionally arranged like when you enter into your community or state library to sort books or materials and according to the languages. So you can choose a topic in any language of choice as long as you can understand. This can only be done by a professional. I can say that SAWBO is a touch of PROFESSIONALISM.
3. Accurate information:
As I mentioned earlier, the team do not compile educational information from hear-say, but they make sure the information given is true and accurate. They take part in the practical procedures even if it requires them travelling to the location. For instance, Dr. Julia Bello-Bravo, Assistant Professor, Food Science and Human Nutrition and co-founder and director of SAWBO, has been to Africa and other continents several times on such assignments.
4. Vast topics covered:
The SAWBO program covers a wide range of topics such as agriculture, health, women empowerment, peace building, e.t.c. so they got you covered on any topic of interest. Isn’t that awesome?
5. Animation strategy:
The animation (cartoon) strategy is one great strategy that makes it interesting and understandable to both children and adults. So even if you don’t have a thing for reading, just watch the animation play as it explains what is said and written, in action.
6. Language translation
Another amazing thing about the SAWBO program is that they translate all written and spoken information to over 100 languages such as English, Spanish, Twi (Ghana), Swahili (Kenya), Igbo (Nigeria) even pidgin English dey there self. E.t.c so you can watch your favorite topic animations in any language of choice. This, sincerely, is the first I have seen.
At this point, even the least educated can understand, provided its in their local language.
7. Free Download:

8. Easy to access:
As stated earlier, all educational topics are arranged professionally and are very easy to access so you don’t have to worry about how can “I find this or how can I find that” when you visit the site.

N.B: IOS devices do not support the SAWBO App at the moment, but I’m sure they are working on that.
